Anime in the Limelight — or AitL — began in 1994 as Hawaii’s first dedicated anime music radio show. Broadcasting weekly from Honolulu, it was hosted by the Legendary Anime DJ Max, who took listeners on a journey through the world of Japanese animation and its unforgettable songs. For a full decade, AitL celebrated everything from classic theme songs to rare B-sides, mixing music, trivia, and the host’s trademark humor and insight. It became a cult favorite among fans who tuned in to discover not just what anime sounded like — but what it felt like.

 

After its final radio broadcast in 2004, Anime in the Limelight became a cherished memory — but the story isn’t over. We had created a video version of the show, a sample you will see below, for a short period, but was unsustainable for various reasons. The show, however, is returning soon in a new format: a shorter, 20-minute video series streaming online. Once again hosted by DJ Max, the modern AitL will dive deep into the history and artistry behind anime music — exploring legendary composers, iconic singers, influential shows, and the creative minds who shaped generations of fans.

 

With its revival, AitL bridges eras — celebrating anime’s musical legacy while embracing the digital age.
